Description:

Documentary looking at the ancient ritual of shark calling, trapping and killing by hand, in the village of Kontu, New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. The film brings out the religious significance of the age-old practice, and suggests that it is disappearing under the onslaught of Western religion, politics, education and commerce. The camera focuses on, among other features, a school for young children, young people selling shark fin trophies for money to buy drink and follows a sharkcaller during a spectacular and dangerous battle with a shark. Various speakers talk about conditions under German rule during the war, British rule, and the presence of Japanese and Australian troops. <54mn>
