NATIONAL PRESS THEATREAccession:1986-0381Media:SoundProduction date:1986-05-06Production company:National Press TheatreDescription:Press conference held by Dr. Stuart Smith, Chairman, Science Council of Canada, and Dr. James M. Gilmour, Director of Research at the council, to express concerns about current free trade negotiations between Canada and the United States. In his opening remarks, Smith warms: that we may wind up "trading off our future" in advanced science and technology products in order to retain access to traditional products like lumber and wheat; that if Canada loses its power to assist its own advanced industries, its domestic market may disappear; and that free trade can be a winning proposition only if the Americans give us "real equity" and "genuine access" to their government programs for promoting science and technology. In response to questions from the press, Smith and Gilmour discuss subtle measures to restrict access to American markets; Canadian support of domestic suppliers; and foreign ownership. <20mn>Subjects:CANADA~INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS~INTERNATIONAL TRADE~INTERNATIONAL TRADE REGULATION~PRESS CONFERENCES~UNITED STATES ~GILMOUR, JAMES M.~SMITH, STUARTLanguage:EnglishDetailed holdings information: -
