From the paintings of the self-taught painter, William Kurelek, a vivid picture of immigration, homesteading and achievement of modest independence by his father who came from the Ukraine. There are scenes of village life in the Ukraine which was left with such mingled hope and doubt; then the early days of struggle on a prairie homestead, and the growing comfort, confidence and family. The commentary of the film tells the story as Kurelek remembers it and his paintings record it. The story concludes with the move down east where his father had planned to retire but where, finding idleness irksome, he bought a small farm. Here in Ontario, Kurelek paints the present life of Canada with the same pleasure he painted the old. <10mn 7s>
