Winston Churchill formally opens the British election campaign for the Conservative Party with a statement of party principles.~Churchill says "all Europe looks to Great Britain in curiosity and anxiety ... What is the supreme and fundamental question we have to answer in these trying times? ... "Should we take another plunge into Socialist regimentation or ... regain the freedom, initiative and opportunities of British life?"~He feels that the main reason Great Britain is not able to make its way in the world is because of the effects of wartime restrictions which other nations have managed to shake off.~Churchill calls for the establishment and maintenance of a basic standard of life and labour "...below which a man or a woman, however old, however weak, shall not be allowed to fall". He calls for a sizable value for money and equitable taxation. He proposes a four-year plan for social reform: "Food, work, and health".~"Let us make a supreme effort to mount our dangers ... and still remain forces in our island that can bring back our true glory and range our people once again in the vanguard of Christian civilization to revive and save the world".~CBS correspondents Howard K. Smith and Winston Burdett comment on the speech. Their feeling is this speech was very moderate in tone and not a fighting speech. <20mn>
