This television documentary pays tribute to Canadian surgeon Norman Bethune, best known for his efforts to cure victims of tuberculosis and his medical aid to China. Bethune's career is highlighted through interviews and footage of major events of his time, alternating with stills of: Bethune's minister father and missionary mother; his art; Bethune operating at the Royal Victoria Hospital (Montreal); with his medical team in Spain; and attending the wounded in China, where he died of septicemia at age 49 from operating under poor conditions. Interviews with contemporaries, including Marian Scott, a friend during the depression of the 1920s and 1930s; Stanley Ryerson, Communist Party of Canada Leader; Hazen Sise and Henning Sorensen, who accompanied Bethune in Spain; and Dr. Ma Hai-teh, an American doctor in China, reveal Bethune as a charismatic personality, an artist, a medical innovator, and a social reformer. Included in their observations of Bethune are comments on: his belief that tuberculosis is "a disease of poverty"; his interest in communism; his contribution to the development of a health scheme in Montreal (a precursor to medicare); and the reverence he inspired in the Chinese people, who called him Pai Chu En (White Seeks Grace). Stills and footage of the Great Depression; fascist attacks on Spain during the Spanish Civil War; and the Japanese invasion of China in 1938, indicate major influences on Bethune's life. Additional noteworthy stills include his wife, Frances Campbell Penney, and a painting of Bethune during his meeting with China's Chairman, Mao Tse-tung. <60mn>
