External Affairs Minister Lester B. Pearson gives a statement about Igor Gouzenko, Harry Dexter White and the Canadian government's position about the two. There are three microphones on the desk in front of him, one from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Pearson gives the Canadian government's position on the request by the State Department that Igor Gouzenko appear before a United States Senate committee. He states that Gouzenko, as a Canadian citizen, has the right to speak to anyone about whatever he wants, and that it is up to him to decide whether he wants to compromise his secret identity by doing so. In view of the fact that the State Department has made a second request that Gouzenko be made available, the Canadian government is willing to make arrangements under Canadian auspices if Gouzenko is willing, at which time a U.S. representative can ask questions, but any evidence or information can only be made public with the approval of the Canadian government. Pearson emphasizes that the Canadian government is not trying to withhold information, but that any information obtained from a Canadian citizen where security issues are concerned must be elicited in the proper manner, quietly and confidentially. With regard to Harry Dexter White, the former assistant secretary to the U.S. Treasury, later executive director of the International Monetary Fund, who is accused of being a Soviet agent, Pearson asserts that the Canadian government did not instruct the Canadian delegation to nominate White to a post at the International Monetary Fund or to any other body. Pearson refers to the real and menacing Communist conspiracy. He states that Canada is interested in good relations with the United States. As he makes his concluding remarks, Pearson removes his glasses. <6mn>
