This film is shot mainly in Sweden where farmer is also woodsman. Seen is a tiller is being pulled by a team of horses over the soil. Trees are hacked down. Later logs are seen being transported by horse-drawn sled. Log drivers send logs down flumes to the river. Downstream logs are sorted. Sawmill operations make planks and boards out of logs for house-building. Plywood is shown being manufactured, also plywood and pulp and paper. Paper in huge rolls is handled at the docks. A glimpse is caught of vast lumberyards. The necessity of maintaining forests is illustrated by scenes of floods and flood victims in Asia. Dry areas in this part of the globe are symbolized by a cracked road travelled by team of bullock.~Sowing tree seeds to secure new forests to assure a continued supply of wood has become a practice in most lumber producing countries. Scientists are seen artificially inseminating a tree to procure a sturdy hybrid seed. Trees are tested for their strength. To prevent disease trees are sprayed from an airplane. A forest fire is seen engulfing trees in its path. Another danger to forests is war. In this film we see a devastated forest, treeless but for broken branches. When cities are in ruins, as is illustrated in this document, lumber is needed to reconstruct. A very important International Timber Conference is attended by representatives of a score of interested countries (1947 Marienbad, Czech Conference). A survey of lumber-producing countries is taken.~Foreing ships in an African port load hard-wood lumber. Elephants are seen transporting teak logs. Several inhabitants are hacking down tropical trees in the South-East. With a new emphasis on reforestration, we see tree-planting in Greece. New technologies bring machinery like bull-dozers, motorized saws, tractors and cater pillar trailers onto the scene of a lumber camp. New research techniques are advancing the quest for stronger and continued supplies of timber. The shot of a bonfire expresses the age-old need of men for wood as a source of heat energy. <22mn>
