ALS. The writer acknowledges the addressee's letter of [7] December 1805; see Lettere 011], appointing him bp. of Chytri and successor [and coadjutor] of the vicar apostolic in Newfoundland [J.L. O'Donel]. He was consecrated in Wexford on 4 May 1806 by the abp. of Dublin [J.T. Troy], the bp. of Germanicia [Ryan], and the bp. of Kildare [Delany]. In July [1806] he left Waterford and reached the island after a voyage of seven weeks. The [bp. of] Thyatira [O'Donel] is in good health, and left in July for England and Ireland. The islanders, of whom c.12,000 are Catholics (but they are two to three times more numerous in the fishing season), are of mediocre quality, and many are lustful, drink too much and are infected by the new philosophy.

As far as religion is concerned, Newfoundland is subdivided into four districts, all served by Franciscan [Recollet] missionaries: Placentia ([J.] Phelan), Ferryland (Fitzpatrick), Conception Bay (Ewer), St. John's (the writer). They need help of young and robust missionaries. The writer complains of the climate, the snow, the distances, and requests special faculties and, if possible, to be transferred to a less onerous post. PF notes.
