ALS. The writer acknowledges the addressee's letter [dated from Rome] of 19 September [1801] and the enclosed faculties for the bp. of Québec [Denaut]. He asks that all spiritual powers granted to him as coadjutor be made valid in the case of his succession to the bishopric, and that the bull [of 26 April 1800; see C 004] appointing him coadjutor be duly corrected. A C of the writer's professio fidei is enclosed [see C 014]; another C was sent during the past year to Gerdil [see C 010]. The three bp.s who preceded him [Mariauchau d'Esgly, Hubert, Denaut] never sent their professiones fidei or oaths of loyalty [to Rome].

The writer recalls that, were it not for the oppressive attitude of the [British] government, he would repeat the suggestion made by Hubert on [24 October] 1789 [see Calendar 1622-1799, VI 207-208] that his diocese be subdivided. He also touches upon tithes, benefices for the coadjutorship, Chaumont's usefulness, Gravé [de La Rive]'s death on 4 February [1802], the bp. [Denaut]'s pastoral visitation in the south [in 1801], Cape Breton [Island], Ile Saint-Jean [Prince Edward Island] and Nova Scotia [in 1802].
