A long Instruction relating to the state of religion in the French colonies of America and to the appointment of a new bp. [of Québec]. L'Îsle-Dieu [La Rue]'s M [of 20 Feb. 1764; see Varia 393] is summarized, with the decision made in the CP [convened on 24 Mar. 1764; see C 2, 589; Varia 117, 389-411]. PF favours the appointment of a vic. ap., who might be the same person [Montgolfier] selected by the chapter, to whom the usual 300 Roman scudi could be assigned. The addressee is to have L'Îsle-Dieu convince the chapter of Québec, and then inform its deputies [La Corne de Chaptes, Montgolfier] in London, being careful not to expose Rome's participation in the affair.
