Rear Admiral William M. (Bill) Landymore, born 1916 in Brantford Ontario, attended Brandford Collegiate Institute where, as soon as he was able, he joined the school cadet corps. After entering the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, he took naval training for two summers and transferred to the Navy. He describes cadet training in "HMS Frobisher" and life as midshipman in the East Indies in "HMS Emerald", as well as duty in Haifa patrolling "the Palestine peoples" and of secret gunnery trials on "HMS Galsgow". Having completed Sublieutenant's courses, he joined "HMS Windsor" in 1939, a "very special" destroyer. Then brief time on "HMCS Restigouche", Landymore goes to "HMCS Margaree", previously "HMS Diana", newly transferred to the RCN in 1940 and refitting at London's Albert Docks. Surviving repeated German bombing attacks she was deemed a "lucky ship" ... only to suffer the same fate as "Fraser" on her first voyage to Canada.~After a brief respite ashore at "HMCS Naden" on Canada's Pacific Coast, Landymore returned to England in 1942 to specialize in Gunnery then to sea again in action on the cruiser "HMS Belfast". Next he joined a "Work-up Team" conducting gunnery "work-ups" of many Canadian and British destroyers, among them "HMCS Haida and Huron". European hostilities winding down, he went to "HMS Uganda" as Gunnery Officer in 1944 on commissioning, and served in her in the Pacific until that ship withdrew from the war.~Landymore then covers his tours in Korea in 1951-1952 and much else, including a full report of "HMCS Bonaventure" recounting that ship's astounding achievements. However more noteworthy and absorbing is the riveting account of his battle with the "Government-of-the-Day" which was intent on relentlessly expanding the economic advantages of integrating amny parts of the armed forces into a senseless unfication. <60mn>
