ALS. A general report on the state of religion in Canada. The new rulers allow the free exercise of Catholicism, and the writer is in good terms with the Governor [G. Carleton]. Nobody renounced his religion except for a priest [Chartier de Lotbinière] and three/four girls who married Englishmen. The college has been discontinued for seven years due to the persecution suffered by the Jesuits, that he hopes the Pope [Clement XIV] will not suppress. He asks for the shifting of the indulgence of the Forty Hours, to be enlightened on the attitude toward Catholic women who marry before Protestant ministers, to be granted marriage dispensations for the Acadians of New England, whether he is allowed to consecrate a coadjutor.
