General note:

Albert Sheldon Pennoyer was a painter and writer, born in Oakland California in 1888, died in Madrid Spain in 1957. He lived in the United States and Europe, and studied in California, Pennsylvania, London, Paris and Rome. He was a member of several art associations in the U.S. and exhibited heavily there. He is memorable also for his books: "This Was California," 1938; and "Locomotives in Our Lives," 1954.

Physical description note:

The painting was originally in a poor wooden frame which has been removed. On the back of the frame is a notation "Merrilees limed oak oil" from the framer. The same information is written on the verso of the painting board.
