Inscription: inscribed in pen and brown ink, recto l.r. (7.7 cm in from l.r. corner, written on an angle): R Irvine [Irvine bearly visible, apparently partly lost when conserved], Inscription: inscribed in pencil on a modern mount (now discarded): R. IRVINE. / THE ABOVE DRAWING PROBABLY DATES FROM 1800-1820. / REMAINS OF SIGNATURE AT BOTTOM RIGHT. / PRIOR TO CLEANING THE INITIAL APPREARED TO BE A / CLEAR "R" - HOWEVER NO SUCH ARTIST IS LISTED AND ONE IS FORCED TO WONDER WHETHER THE ARTIST IS / NOT IN FACT HUGH IRVINE EXHBT. FROM 1808-DIED 1829 / IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT THE NAVAL BASE DEPICTED / IS NOT IN THE BRITISH ISLES BUT IS COLONIAL AND ONE / GENTLEMAN THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE KINGSTON ONTARIO, Inscription: typewritten label on the backing board of the framed (now discarded): Remains of signature at bottom right - prior to / cleaning it was very clear. / The identification of the place was made by the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich - who got / in touch with the Canadian authorities for / confirmation.
