Aikins, James Cox, 1823-1904 : The Hon. James Cox Aikins, born in Toronto Township, was educated at Upper Canada Academy, Cobourg. He farmed in Peel County and was president of the Union Fire Insurance, and Manitoba and North West Loan Co. He was a Conservative member of the Canada Legislative Assembly, 1854-1861, of the Legislative Council, 1862-1867, and of the Senate, 1867-1882, 1896-1904. He served as minister without portfolio 1869, Secretary of State,, 1869-1873, 1878-1880, and Minister of Inland Revenue, 1880-1882. He was Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, 1882-1888. Forster, John Wycliffe Lowes, 1850-1938 : John Wycliffe Lowes Forster, painter, born 1850 Norval, Ontario, died 1938, Toronto, Ontario. J.W.L. Forster was the son of Thomas Forster, a local justice of the peace. He studied painting with J. W. Bridgman in Toronto, 1869, as well as sharing a studio with him for many years. He is known principally as a portrait painter. Forster painted portraits of many Canadian Governors-General as well as Prime Ministers along with portraits of the Emperor and Empress of Japan as well as several prominent Canadians from all walks of life.
