Support 23.900 x 39.000 cmLanguage of material:no languageScope and content:The Journal of Cook's Voyages was published in 1777, in two volumes, and includes engravings done by many artists after drawings executed by Hodges on this second journey. The official first edition was published February 1, 1777 by William Strahan in New Street, Shoe Lane and Thomas Cadell in the Strand, London, England. This image appears in Volume One, facing page 294., As scientists today still puzzle over the statues idols of Easter Island, so did Captain Cook and his men. In his expressed opinion, the gigantic statues were not idols, but rather burying places, as evidenced by a human skeleton lying in one of the platforms, just covered with stones (see pages 294-295 for more detailed description)., William Hodges was chosen by the British Admiralty to accompany Captain James Cook on his Second Voyage (1772-1775) as the official artist of this expedition.Additional name(s):Additional information:Location of originals note:The item was at one time recorded as having been removed from Volume One but was re-inserted and is in container (phase box) 2000785782.Exhibitions note:Exhibition Title: Enlightenment, Innovation and Revolution: The Long 18th Century.
