Subject depicts two sleighs in a winter landscape. In the l.r. is a small sleigh carrying wood logs. The sleigh is being pulled by two small dogs; a child is to the left of the sleigh. The other is being pulled by two horses. There are two men and a woman seated in the sleigh; they are covered with a fur blanket. A few architectural structures are visible in the background; behind these structures are snow covered hills., This item was purchased at the same time as a lithograph after Best, ex-LeMarchant Collection, depicting John and Ida, children of Sir Joh G. LeMarchant. See Lumsden, Early View of British North America, 1994, p.32 re the provenance of the LeMarchant group of works., Pencil inscription on verso was written by the dealer. Note that the dealer thought the work was of Nova Scotia, however, Sotheby's indicated the topography is that of St. Johns harbour.
