A bronze medal sculptured for the Paris Mint by French Engraver, Jean Asselbergs. The medal commemorates the life and work of American Author, James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851). Cooper is best known for writing the novel "The Last of the Mohicans" (1826).

The obverse side of the medal displays a bust of Cooper and is engraved with his name, as well as the year of his birth and the year of his death.

The reverse side of the medal is engraved with an image of a buffalo in reference to Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales" (of which "The Last of the Mohicans" is the second book in the series). Circling the image are the names of some of Cooper's works including: "The Last of the Mohicans," "The Pioneers," and "The History of the Navy of the United States of America."
