Sculptured by French Medallist Albert Herbemont for the Paris Mint, this medal commemorates the life and work of ancient Greek Tragedian (tragic playwright), Sophocles (495-406 B.C.). His most notable works are his Theban plays featuring the stories of Oedipus and Antigone: "Oedipus the King," "Oedipus at Colonus," and "Antigone."

The obverse side of the medal displays a bust of Sophocles, in profile.

The reverse side of the medal displays an image of a Nereid or sea nymph being tossed amongst the waves of the ocean, surrounded by the titles of Sophocles' surviving plays.
