Fort Lac la Pluie was established by the North West Company between 1775 and 1787 on the north side of Rainy River below the falls at the outlet of Rainy Lake. It was located on a high bank on the west side of modern Fort Frances (Ontario). The fort was a provisioning post for the Athabasca brigades, handling supplies of fish, wild rice, corn and maple sugar. It was also a centre for making kegs and canoes.
The North West Company's employees were mostly French-Canadians and Métis.
