Amherst to Monckton. A.L.S. Enclosing an extract from a letter from Halifax dated October 20, stating that that morning, a vessel arrived from England and brought a letter from Captain Parry dated September off Finisterre, in which he says they learned from the master of a schooner bound from Lisbon to London that an engagement had taken place on the Portugal frontiers, shortly before he sailed between the Spanish army and that of the English and Portuguese under the Count de Lippe, and that the Spaniards were entirely defeated with a loss of 7,000 whereas the Allies lost only 400. Col. Burgoune's light infantry behaved extremely well and made a horrid slaughter of the enemy's broken troops.
