A documentary on the need for and establishment of nuclear free zones around the world. After looking at the destructive impact of radiation on the community of Fernald, Ohio, this program then alternates betweeen zeroing in on the growing international interest by muncipalities and other regions in opposing nuclear weapons and becoming nuclear free zones. Also addressed is the environmental threat and peril to life and health posed by nuclear weapons and the nuclear industry in America. Other topics introduced are: criticism of the United States Department of Energy; the impact on native American communites of uranium mining; city politics; the American peace movement; military spending; political conditions in the Soviet Union; the atomic bomb and WWII Japan. Excerpt of speeches by: Lisa Crawford, commmunity organizer from Fernald, Ohio at an American congressional committee hearing; Dr. Rosalie Bertell, radiation scientist and President of the International Institute of Concern for Public Health; David Lange, Prime Minister of New Zealand, at a special function; O. Suleymenov, Soviet poet, chairman of a Soviet environmental activist movement. Comments by prominent nuclear weapons proponents as well as leading anti-nuclear activists including: U.S. Admiral Ronald Hayes, former commander-in-chief, US Pacific Fleet; June Casey of the National Association of Nuclear Survivors; David Lange, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, 1986-1989; American Secretary of Defence, Caspar Weinberger, 1981-1988. Scenes relating to the following subject areas include: nuclear weapons and nuclear weapons facilities, past and present; anti-nuclear protest rallies; WWII atomic bomb and destruction wraught in Japan; radiation health risks and injuries, including a look at post-weapons testing health conditions in Micronesia; a United Nations General Assembly meeting, 1975; and Kazakstan, USSR environment protest meeting, February 28, 1989~The documentary ends with footage of an official meeting between President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev. <57mn>
