Material for a history of Clarendon Township. International evidence suggests that the author (fl. 1868-1952) was W.A. Hodgins, a Shawville merchant who was a prolific writer on local history.

The collection consists of notes made chiefly from the Council minutes of Clarendon and Shawville; drafts and fair copies of narratives based on those notes; and drafts and fair copies of anecdotal accounts of persons, places and events in the history of Clarendon Township, derived from local and family traditions as well as from personal memory. Included is a considerable amount of information on the early nineteenth century Irish immigrants to the Ottawa Valley. There is some duplication in the narratives and little obvious order in the work, which is arranged as follows:

Clarendon, ca. 1818-1912 (fair copy and draft): - The earliest settlers, ca. 1818-[1851]; - Historical account of Clarendon, 1821-[1880]; - Annals of Clarendon, 1866-1912.
