An interview with Elmer Starr, senior citizen of Newmarket, Ontario. Starr, a Quaker, relates his knowledge and experience of the Society of Friends settlement in and around Newmarket. In addition to Elmer Starr there are a couple of female interviewees who add to the discussion. The interviewer is not identified. The recordings were made by the York Pioneer and Historical society with amateur equipment. This recording is a dubbing from theirs. Elmer Starr relates the early history of the Starr family in Newmarket from 1804; the Quaker meeting house on Yonge Street; the horses, carriages and horse sheds in Newmarket in the early years of the century; an anecdote of a runaway horse during a meeting; anecdote of Starr's grandmother in prayerm so abstracted that she did not notice flies crawling on her face or the dint administered to her bonnet by a grandchild with a broom; his behaviour as a child at Quaker meetings; an account of the 'separation' of the friends into liberal and conservative groups. Starr tells of the two meeting houses produced by the dichotomy; the colored minister, [William Allen], from North Carolina who preached so loudly that he could drown out the minister in the opposing meeting house; details of Quaker courting the difficulty of finding a spouse that was not a close relative; Quaker courting, like their praying, was done mostly in silence; the size of the Yonge St. meeting; Sunday school; philosophy of education; Pickering College. History of the Starr family as Quakers from 1740 on (disjunctive); winter migrations of Quakers to Canada; taking hogs to markets in York in winter; drinking at all the cross-road inns; those who drank beer became unbearably cold but Grandfather Starr who drank only water, was warm. Temperance anecdote: One Quaker who had ulcers drank whiskey and died at fifty, grandfather Starr, with a similar complaint, drank castor oil and lived to 80; reflections on the moral aspects of experience; further Starr family history; an anecdote of Starr's grandmother [Stevens] who appeared to Staff, after her funeral, hovering above his bed and beckoning. <2h>
