Television documentary program examining the struggle for survival of the Nisgha Indians in New Aiyansh, set in the Nass River valley of British Columbia. In an effort to preserve their identity and ancestral culture, they have claimed aboriginal titles to more than three and a half million acres of the valley. The program outlines the history of their dealings with the white man, from the arrival of the early settlers and missionaries to the Nisghas' recent land claim sttruggles with the provincial and federal governments.~The documentary includes: extensive footage on the village participating in the raising of a massive totem pole, one of the vital historical symbols of their people which the Christian Church had destroyed in the past, therefore dismantling the foundation of their people; performances of the "peace dance"; the success of organizing their own school district where young Nisghas learn their language and culture; and interviews with James Gosnell, President of the Nisgha Tribal Council, and Eli Gosnell, master carver, who discusses the significance of the totem poles. <30mn>
