[Neilson]Description:Rebroadcast of the first part of the eyewitness radio report of the explosion that destroyed the German Zeppelin Hindenburg at Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 37 people, on May 6, 1937. This rebroadcast is introduced by an unidentified announcer who begins with the words "May 6, Lakehurst, New Jersey". The announcer calls this an important example of on-the-spot radio reporting. The 1937 report by Herbert Morrison, a reporter with NBC affiliate WLS of Chicago, begins with Morrison describing the Zeppelin arriving overhead. This is followed by the explosion, which knocks the tone arm off the recording unit operated by Charles F. [Neilson], and Morrison's efforts to compose himself as he says "this is terrible" and "this is the worst thing I've ever seen". Morrison describes the aftermath, including the realization that spectators were not killed by the debris of the crashing airship. The recording ends abruptly.Language:EnglishNotes:Detailed holdings information: -
