First in a series of videotaped oral history interviews entitled SEASONED SAILORS highlighting the wartime experiences of Canadian naval officers during World War II. This interview features Vice Admiral Harry George DeWolf CBE DSO DSC in discussion with retired Captain Fred Frewer. DeWolf speaks about naval defence in general and about Canada's military role world-wide. After recalling his life as a teenaged navel cadet just after World War I, he describes several events from the time when he commanded HMCS St. Laurent in the early years of World War II, the first Canadian warship to engage the enemy while firing on German positions in June 1940 during the evacuation of British troops near St. Valery-en-Caux, France. Describing sea battles involving his next ship, the HMCS Haida, he recalls in detail one very successful night action against German destroyers in the English Channel, the tragic loss of the Athabaskan, and the Haida's subsequent role in the dramatic rescue at sea of some of the Athabaskan crew, a memory that remains fresh in his mind 50 years later.
