Jackson, longtime president of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers union (UE) about the history of the UE in Welland, Ontario. Jackson begins with his successful sign up of 4,000 workers at the Page-Hersey, Stokes Rubber and the Electro Metallurgical Co. Ltd. and other plants in Welland in the early 1940s. He also talks about the difficulties obtaining union certification by the companies, the Eastern European plant workers, the difficult working conditions at the plants, and the low pay. Other topics included in this interview are the no-strike policy during the war years, the UE's educational policy, and the lack of labour legislation in Canada to protect workers. On side B of the original recording, Jackson focuses on the current trade union movement (circa 1982), the trade union movement in socialist countries such as Poland, the Communist Party in the Soviet Union, and his internment at the beginning of World War Two.Language:EnglishDetailed holdings information: -
