Produced as part of a public relations campaign by the Shaw Festival to promote the development of a new Shaw Festival theatre - on the suggestion of Mavor Moore.~Festival artistic director Paxton Whitehead and president Calvin G. Rand appear as on camera hosts introducing and concluding the film. Scenes from the Shaw production of Heartbreak House are shown featuring performances by Jessica Tandy, Tony Van Bridge, Frances Hyland and Paxton Whitehead. Also shown are excerpts from Irish actor Michael Macliammoir's one man production of The Importance of Being Oscar. The plays are performed at the Court House Theatre in cramped quarters with inadequate facilities as the film demonstrates. The theatre also doubles as a police station during the day and once housed the areas civic offices.~Historical buildings and sites in and around Niagara-on-the-Lake are shown including Forts George and Mississauga, Niagara Falls and local colonial buildings.~Backstage interviews with Jessica Tandy and Frances Hyland discussing the festival are also featured.~Festival founder Brian Doherty conducts a tour as part of the Shaw seminar he coordinates. <27mn 04s>

1. Additional information on this film may be available in the production file (Manuscript Division MG 28 III 99, Volume 143).~2. [Shaw Festival] was a working title which appears in some Crawley documentation.~3. Filmed at Niagara-on-the-Lake from July 26 to 30, 1968.~4. Revised sound track features a correction in Frances Hyland's narration. The festival's distance from Niagara Falls is corrected to 12 miles from the mistaken 30. The length of the sound track is not altered by this change.~5. Animation refers to the map sequence. Initially, St. Catherines was misspelled. This was later re-shot.~6. Winner of a silver medal in the Promotional Films category at the International Film and T.V. Festival of New York.~7. F. R. "Budge" and Lenore Crawley can be seen arriving at the theatre and mingling with crowds at a reception.
