CBC television news special on the appointment of the first woman judge to Canada's Supreme Court, Justice Bertha Wilson.~The segments are as follows: Mansbridge and Halton on biographical information about Wilson; scene inside court and judges coming in and sitting down; Bernard Hofley, Registrar of the Supreme Court, leaves the room to get Wilson; Hofley reads the appointment in English and French; Mansbridge talks about Wilson's life; Bora Laskin swears in Wilson, in English and French; Wilson, Laskin and Hofley sign register; Laskin takes Wilson to her seat; Laskin welcomes Wilson and talks about her experience on the Ontario Supreme Court; Laskin talks about the future of the Supreme Court of Canada; shots of Wilson, other judges, and Jean Chrétien; Laskin speaks in French (translated into English); Chrétien speaks in French (simultaneous English translation) about the history of the Supreme Court, Wilson's achievements and why she was chosen; shots of Laskin, Wilson, the courtroom and other judges; speech by Rendall Dick, Deputy Attorney General of Ontario (in place of Attorney General Roy McMurtry, who is unable to attend), about Wilson's innovative, bold and fair work on the Supreme Court of Ontario; speech by John D. Bowlby, Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada, about her five years before she was able to join the Bar and he reads a newspaper clipping dating from the time when she was called to the Bar; Paul Fraser, President of the Canadian Bar Association, thanks the CBC for broadcasting from the Supreme Court; view from back of court to the bench; Fraser talks about the Supreme Court, Wilson and the two articles she wrote about wills; Wilson thanks everyone; speech by Wilson about being Canadian by choice, the privilege of joining the bench of the Supreme Court, her study of French (she speaks in French) and of civil code and Quebec case law; view from front to back of court room; Laskin adjourns; the judges leave the court.~Mansbridge and Halton discuss the potential for change in the Supreme Court because there is a woman judge now. Halton says that she is a liberal-minded judge, giving examples of her cases when she was on the bench in Ontario. Newman interviews Jean Chrétien, who says that Wilson was chosen for her competence. Now that Canada has its own constitution, Chrétien says that there will be a change in the way judges are appointed. He says that he wants to appoint the best person. Mansbridge and Halton talk about the number of women called to the bar and the expectation that the need to interpret the constitution will bring a heavier workload to the Supreme Court. Newman interviews Ray Hnatyshyn, who believes that the Supreme Court will have a more important role when the constitution is patriated and he says that the method of making judicial appointments should be changed. Mansbridge and Halton sign off.
