Second day of the fourth annual Foster Advertising seminar on marketing. Doug Turnbull, one of the conference organizers, welcomes participants to the Thursday morning session. The subject of the session is changes in product distribution systems.~The first speakers are Perry Myers, President of Perry Myers Incorporated of New York City, and G. Allan Burton, Vice President and Managing Director of Simpson's Limited. Myers talks about discount stores. Burton talks about how department stores cope with changing distribution systems and gives a brief history of the nationwide development of Canadian department stores. He also talks about developments in the history of the Simpson's chain of stores. This is followed by a panel discussion moderated by C.B. Johnson of the University of Western Ontario. The panel members are Perry Myers, G. Allan Burton, J.G. Gould, who is President of the Drug Trading Company, and Frank Morley of Loblaws. They answer questions from the audience about various aspects of distribution.~The next presentation is by Dr. William [Lazer] of Michigan State University about the development of customer-oriented marketing policies. The next speaker, John F. [Stolle], explains a new management planning system, the program evaluation review technique (PERT). He discusses PERT's applicability to different management tasks, manual versus computer processing of PERT data and potential uses of PERT. [Stolle] states that 75 percent of the 7500 computer installations in the United States are programmed to use PERT. This is followed by a panel discussion moderated by Fred [Cravelle] of the Ryerson Polytechic Institute, with panel members Dr. William [Lazer], John F. [Stolle], Tom [Nee], who is Executive Vice President of CCM, and economist Jack Smith. They discuss PERT and how to capitalize on changes in product distribution systems.
