Fonds consists of records created and maintained by Leonidas Polymenakos, documenting his life and career. Records include correspondence, reports, newsclippings, speeches, photographs and audio-visual material concerning his involvement in the Greek-Canadian community, covering such topics as relations with the Greek Orthodox Church in Canada; preservation of Greek language and heritage; Greek-Canadian community projects and activities; and legal issues. There is also some personal and bibliographical material in the fonds.

Polymenakos, Leonidas, 1909-1982 : Leonidas Polymenakos was born in Greece and during the Second World War he was active in the Greek Resistance. He was captured by the Italians and imprisoned. After his release in 1943, he was Minister of Health in the Greek Government in Exile. He came to Canada after the Second World War as a Director of the Greek War Relief Fund. He decided to stay in Canada after the outbreak of the Greek Civil War.

In Toronto, he worked as a medical doctor in the Bay-Bloor Streets area. He was President of the Greek Community from 1970 until May, 1982. He was involved in several community projects and provided the leadership in the building projects - Hellenic Cultural Centre, St. John's Greek Orthodox Church and the Alexander the Great Youth Centre in Toronto.

He was a strong promoter of Greek language and culture in Canada and supported the introduction of heritage language classes in the Toronto public school system. He received the Order of Canada on July 1, 1982. He died in Toronto on July 22, 1982 at the age of 73 years.
