This fonds consists of personal documents, photographs of Canadian nurse Alwina Schaan, academic records, a yearbook, graduation clippings, operating room equipment lists, and some material of Winnie Schaan's work in a munitions plant.

A variety of subject matter with the following folders: Assorted Cards and Documents (teacher's report, 1927, 1931, 1932); plan for hospital care, subscribers certificate, Dec. 1944; Oshawa Business College certificate, March 1958; I.D. card from Civil Defence Canada, member of nursing section 1952; certificate from Oshawa Collegiate & Vocational Institute, chemistry 1944/1945; Dept. of Labour, Training Branch certificate for completing training as a war production job instructor (2); social secutity card; nurses' pocket reference; Registered Nurses Association of Ontario membership card; Province of Ontario certificate as registered nurse; Oshawa General Hospital School for Nurses history card; Alumnae Association of Oshawa General Hospital School for Nurses Constitution & By-Laws, 1951), Blank Folder (photo of Miss Schaan; "Hints of Safe Handling of Explosives Used in Shell Filling Plants"; student's record of practical work, Sept 1944; graduation program from Oshawa General Hospital School for Nurses, 1947), Diplomas & Yearbooks, Procedures Booklet, and Autograph Booklets.

Schaan, Alwina, 1917-1991 : Alwina (Winnie) Schaan, was born in April 1917, on a farm outside of McNutt, Saskatchewan. She graduated from high school in McNutt and at the outbreak of Second World War, she moved to Ontario, where she worked in the War Industries Plant in Ajax.

She left the munitions plant in 1944, and entered the Nursing Studies program at the Oshawa General Hospital. She graduated, at the top of her class, in 1948, and went to the John Hopkins Hospital for graduate studies. She returned to the Oshawa General Hospital after graduating from the John Hopkins Hospital, and worked her entire career at the hospital, retiring in 1971 as Head Nurse of the Operating Room. Winnie Schaan died in 1991.

Custodial history:

These records were donated to the Canadian Nursing Association by Alwina Schaan's nephew, Gary Schaan, in 1992. The Canadian Nurses Association fonds was acquired in 2000, and Alwina Schaan's records were created into a separate fonds in 2005.
