Fonds consists of material relating to Tarassoff's career at Noranda Mines/ Noranda Inc. including the Noranda Research Centre 1964-1988 of which he was its director 1982-1988. Material on the research and development of the "Noranda Process" for smelting cooper matte and/or recycled copper. A small number of files on Tarassoff as Noranda's Vice-President and Chief Scientist 1988-1991. Files on the Minister's National Advisory Council to CANMET (chairman 1988-1991); the Canadian Research Management Assoc. (chairman 1988-1989), the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (president 1990-1991) and the Metallurgical Society (president 1985-1986). There are some files relating to Tarassoff's history of the Orford Nickel Mine. Also included are the memoirs of his father Peter Anton Tarassoff (1904-1993).

Tarassoff, Peter, 1934- : Peter Tarassoff was born in Montreal, the son of a Russian father and a Czech mother. He received his bachelors in Metallurgical Engineering from McGill in 1956 and his doctorate in Chemical Metallurgy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962. He worked for Quebec Iron and Titanium Corp. 1962-1964. He then joined the Noranda Research Centre in pointe Claire QC as a Research Engineer 1964-1967 working his way up to Director of Research and Development, 1982-1988. Much of this time was devoted to developing the Noranda Process for smelting copper. From 1988 to 1991 he was Vice President and Chief Scientist for Noranda Inc. Tarassoff was involved in various mining/metallurgical societies and was the President of Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum 1990-1991, the Chairman of the CANMET Advisory Council of Energy Mines and Resources and President of the Canadian Research Management Association, 1988-1989.

Tarassoff is a well-known mineral collector who has done considerable work on the mineralogy of Mount St-Hilaire QC. The mineral "petarasite" is named after him.
