The series comprises letters from the actor Hume Cronyn to his sister Katharine Cronyn Harley between 1947 and 1988. His letters include news about mutual acquaintances and family, and his wife Jessica Tandy; news about their latest projects for stage and screen; clippings of reviews, playbills and publicity releases; information about their travels for work and pleasure; and photographs of their daughter Tandy Cronyn in the 1960s and their new house in 1984.

Cronyn, Hume, 1911-2003 : Hume Cronyn was born 18 July 1911 in London, Ontario, the son of Hume Blake Cronyn (a businessman and a Member of Parliament) and Frances Amelia Labatt, of the brewing company family. Hume Cronyn studied drama at McGill University, and continued his acting studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. In 1934, he made his Broadway debut and won widespread acclaim for his 1935 performance in Three Men on a Horse. His first Hollywood film was Hitchcock's 1943 Shadow of a Doubt, while his performance the following year in The Seventh Cross earned him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor.

Cronyn married actress Jessica Tandy in 1942 and they collaborated on stage or screen in The Fourposter, The Man in the Dog Suit, The Gin Game, Foxfire, The Petition, Cocoon, and other films and plays. Hume Cronyn became an American citizen late in life. His 1991 autobiography was called A Terrible Liar (ISBN 0688128440). He married author Susan Cooper in July 1996. Cronyn died 15 June 2003 at age 91 of prostate cancer at his home in Fairfield, Connecticut.
