The fonds consists of textual records, photographs, art, and moving images that document the programs and activities of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada. It includes records of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee; the financial direction and management of the society; its constitution and by-laws; committees, chapters and branches; the roll of arms and armorial bearings; publications; and annual dinners, social functions and events, and theatrical commercials on heraldry in Canada.

Royal Heraldry Society of Canada : The Heraldry Society of Canada was founded in Ottawa in 1966 and incorporated by federal charter to represent Canadians with an interest in heraldry. With members in all provinces and territories, the society is committed to the maintenance, fostering and development of the heraldic traditions of Canadians. It has fulfilled this mission by working to increase public awareness of heraldry and of the society; lobbying governments for the protection and proper use of heraldry in Canada; publishing an authoritative quarterly journal "Heraldry in Canada"; organizing an annual conference with lectures by prominent Canadian and foreign heraldists; and organizing heraldic displays, tours, and ceremonial events.

For many years, the Heraldry Society of Canada advocated and lobbied for the creation of a Canadian Heraldic Authority by the Government of Canada. It realized this objective in 1988 when the Queen vested heraldic authority in the Governor General of Canada with the establishment of the Canadian Heraldic Authority, which reports to the Governor General. Before then, Canadians could only receive grants of coats of arms, armorial bearings, badges, and flags from heraldic authorities in other countries. Since 1988, advising the Canadian Heraldic Authority on matters of mutual concern has been an important part of the society's mission.

In 2003, the society received royal assent to use the name "The Royal Heraldry Society of Canada".

Custodial history:

The Heraldry Society of Canada deposited its records and library with the City of Ottawa Archives in the 1970s, which designated the fonds as MG13. The city archives transferred the fonds and publications to Library and Archives Canada at the society's request in 2003 in two separate transfers. The Royal Heraldry Society of Canada formally donated ownership of the fonds to Library and Archives Canada in September 2003.
