The fonds consists of correspondence, speeches, research notes, manuscripts of articles, as well as other material, 1938-2001, which documents Howard Adams's work as writer, educator and social activist speaking on behalf of Métis and Indian peoples. It reflects his endeavours to lay bare the conditions in which Métis and Indians live in this country. At the same time, the documentation illustrates his various endeavours to make in particular the different levels of government aware of the problems faced by Native peoples. At the same time, Adams encouraged both the Indians and Métis to take any opportunities offered them to improve the conditions in which they found themselves.

Adams, Howard, 1921-2001 : Born in St. Louis, Saskatchewan, a historic Métis community north of Saskatoon, in 1921, Howard Adams returned to university to continue his studies after a brief career with the RCMP and then as counsellor at a High School with the Vancouver Board of Education. Upon completing his PhD at Berkeley in 1965, he took a position with the University of Saskatchewan. In addition to teaching, he sought to serve the Métis community, both as advocate of its interests, mentor of its youth, and as president of the Métis Society of Saskatchewan, a position he held from 1968 to 1970. He left Saskatchewan in 1974 to teach Native-American history at the University of California, where he remained until 1989. In addition to teaching and advocacy, Howard Adams also wrote extensively on issues relating to the Native community. His works include "Prison of Grass: Canada from the Native Point of View" (1975) and "A Tortured People" (1995), which documents the difficulties faced by Native peoples in North American society. In recognition of his contributions to his community, be this as social activist, scholar, or writer, Howard Adams was awarded the National Aboriginal Achievement Reward in 1999.

Also, in November 2005, the Gabriel Dumont Institute published Howard Adams' posthumous autobiography entitled HOWARD ADAMS: OTAPAWY! An interactive CD-ROM containing dozens of photographs and documents relating to Howard Adams' life and work is included with this book.
