Attached: The potlatch or "giving away ceremony" was the outstanding feature of Indian celebrations among the Coastal tribes in the early days. Among these people wealth and prestige were of supreme importance. A potlach was always held in connection with the raising of a totem pole, or any other special event..
The more a man gave away the higher he stood in his own opinion and in the estimation of the people. It was an unwritten law, however, that each recipient of a gift would at some future date also give a potlatch and return or at least doulble the value received..
Today the potlach is forbidden on the grounds that is impoverished the Indians, but in remote areas it is still held in a modified form on certain occasions..
This reproduction was acquired at the same time and from the same source as 5 other offset lithographs which depict original paintings by Mildred Valley Thornton. Each was accessioned individually. See acc. nos. 1949-013 through 1949-018..
