Vendette, Émile, 1919-1992 : Carillonneur and composer was born in Ottawa, Ontario, and studied violin before beginning to learn the carillon in 1936. In 1938, alongside Percival Price, he gave his first concert on the Peace Tower carillon. The same year, Vendette left Canada for Belgium to study the carillon with Gustave Nees and theory and composition with Jef Van Nees. He returned to the country in 1939, performing in concert in Canada and the United States; he also supervised the installation of carillons, including the one in the Rainbow Tower in Niagara Falls. In 1955 he inaugurated the carillon at St. Joseph's Oratory in Montréal, where he subsequently gave numerous recitals.
