The central registry files in this accession consist of litigation records created and maintained by the Department of Justice. The Civil Litigation files date from 1965 and are organized by the name of the private party involved in the case, a brief resume of the particulars of the case, and the client department and type of case. The files may contain the following types of documents: correspondence, memoranda, many legal documents both original and copies (for example, affidavits, writ of summons, notices of appeal, examination for discovery, notice of motion, case arguments), copies of other documents such as credit reports, financial statements, medical statements, customs declarations, background material, deportation orders, police accident reports, bills and estimates for repairs, and other police reports, printed material, photographs, as well as artifacts.
