Sub-series consists of Alexander Young's notebooks and miscellaneous papers. Included are student notebooks, account books, notebooks with diary entries (recording deaths of children, for instance), notes about school teaching, notes relating to his business in flax, his marriage certificate, and personal testimonials.

Young, Alexander, 1820-1882 : Alexander Young was brought to Canada by his parents from Scotland in 1832, while he was still a child. He was raised in the township of Drumfries and began teaching there in 1844. In 1847 he married Anna Eliza Keachie and they had a number of children, including Georgina and William P. Young. Alexander Young taught at Galt during the early 1850s, before becoming Principal of Berlin Central School in what is now Kitchener, Ontario, in 1856. He left this position ca. 1864 to establish a flax business in St. Thomas but this venture failed and he resumed his responsibilities at Berlin Central School until his dismissal in 1866, when he was unable to meet new regulations regarding teachers' qualifications. He subsequently taught at St. Thomas and then gained a post as a government inspector in the County of Brant.
