Television series about the history of Ottawa hosted by Bob Carl and Ken Dougan. This fifth program in the series recalls Ottawa's development as the nation's capital in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Commentary as well as photographs, paintings, film, and other archival records document the growth of the suburbs of Sandy Hill and Vanier. The stately homes of civil servants and distinguished citizens along Daly, Laurier, and Nicholas streets are shown still standing as are the Albion Hotel, La Salle Academy, many buildings now belonging to the University of Ottawa, the Court House and Jail, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, and St. Alban's Anglican Church. Ottawa historian Dr. Lucien Brault contributes many interesting facts and details, and a former Ottawa newspaper reporter tells the story of newspapers in the area. Jack Charleson, grandson of Robert Cumming, a founder of Vanier, gives some personal background to the story of this early community. Vanier landmarks dating back to the 1800s include St. Margaret's Anglican Church and Notre Dame de Lourdes Church. The boyhood experiences of Henry Manurski and Ernie Sabourin add colour to the record of floods and flu epidemics which afflicted the citizens of Ottawa in these times. <30mn>
