Sub-series consists of petitions for grants or leases of land, or commutation from seigneurial tenure. Included are not only the petitions themselves and the supporting documents submitted in support of individual requests but also the various documents which became attachments to the petitions as they worked their way through the colonial bureaucracy. The records of each petition can be likened to a file that includes both what was originally submitted by the petitioner and the assorted administrative documents added to the "file" by the different offices of the government responsible for aspects of review of the petition.

Sub-series also consists of 30 postal covers covering the period 1789 to 1841. Early postal markings and rates of the postal service are represented in the series. Of particular interest are straight-line postmarks, with covers from Drummondville (1819) and Shipton (1819).

Textual records (Paper) The CAB RG 1 Shelf List (see RG 1, L3L section) is a typed volume level description which provides volume titles, page numbers and corresponding microfilm reel numbers. Petitions are arranged in alphabetical order and the Shelf List provides ranges of petitioner names for each volume (e.g., vol. 29 - Ackley, Joel to Alexander, Francis; vol. 30 - Alexander, George to Allison, James, etc.). General note:

Some small maps, particularly those inset within documents, remain with the petitions. Notes were customarily placed with the petitions when larger maps were transferred to the physical custody of the Cartographical and Architectural Archives Section. These items can be traced in its catalogues.
