Fonds consists of personal papers such as correspondence and autobiographical notes, 1953-1981, documenting Thassy-Plavenszky's entry into Canada in 1964; manuscripts, including drafts of short stories relating to his studies in Hungarian history and his experiences as a prisoner of war in Russia from 1947-1950, 1947-1981; as well as his diaries, which include correspondence, clippings, invitations and entry notes describing his impressions and experiences, 1964-1980.

Thassy-Plavenszky, Ferenc, 1896-1985 : Born in Hungary 1896, Ferenc Thassy-Plavenszky left his university studies during World War I to volunteer for military service on the Russian front. Wounded in 1916, he returned to military service the next year, serving on the Roumanian and then on the Italian front. In 1935, he was awarded the title of "vitez" for bravery during the war.

While in military service, Thassy-Plavenszky applied to join the Royal Hungarian Gendarmerie. Following demobilization, he was invited to attend a gendarmerie course. On completing his course, he served as a lieutenant in Kapovar. From here, he transferred to Miskolc. He remained with the Gendarmerie, in which he attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel, until April, 1942. Following this, he was employed by the Diosgyor Iron Factory as director of a consumer co-operative.

In September, 1944, he was recalled for military service. He was captured and taken prisoner by the Russians in May, 1945, and remained a Russian prisoner of war until December, 1945, when he was handed over to the Hungarians. Imprisoned in the Kazinc Barcika concentration camp, he was tortured as well as forced into slave labour. He remained in Kazinc Barcika until 1950, when the camp was closed.

Upon his release, Thassy-Plavenszky worked in a variety of jobs, including road contruction, liaison officer, and gardener. On the invitation of his one and only daughter, Eva Sziranyi, a 1956 refugee immigrant, he came to Canada in 1964. Here, he worked as a gardener. While in Canada, he also started a diary, in which he recorded his activities as well as his impressions of the new country and world events in general.
