The collection consists of a hand-illustrated photographic album depicting the leisure activities of John R. O'Connell and his family and friends. The album was created by John O'Connell, a professional artist and illustrator who worked for the International Boundary Commission and for a banknote company as a designer and illustrator. The photographs and watercolour illustrations document various activities of the Ottawa Canoe Club and the Wawasheki Fish and Game Club between the years of ca. 1904 to ca. 1909. There are photographs of canoe trips to Algonquin Park, along the Gatineau and Ottawa Rivers, as well as various events at the Ottawa Canoe Club and the Ko Ko Club, including the Canadian Swimming Championships held at the OCC in 1909. There are also scenes of fishing and hunting, as well as canoe racing in Toronto (n.d.), and of Montreal, and perhaps Quebec City, ca. 1909. John O'Connell appears in many of the photographs, and has been identified by his daughter as the gentleman with the maple leaf shirt and cigar on page 14 of the album. He illustrated the album with great skill, charm and care in watercolours, evoking various outdoor Canadian icons, such as fishing, beavers, dragonflies, etc.
