Sub-series consists of returns to addresses and orders of Parliament. The Secretary of State acts as the central unit to which all addresses, or questions, from the House of Commons and Senate are referred. The department then distributes these to the Ministry responsible and gathers the replies to be submitted to Parliament.

The records in this sub-series include copies of the questions asked and often the replies made. Although a complete set of Addresses and Orders is maintained at the House of Commons, this selection of files has been retained to reflect the relationship between the Secretary of State and the House of Commons.

The registers and index for Addresses and Orders, 1857-1930 (Vols. 676-683, 711, reels T-4161-T-4163), indicate the body to which the question was passed, the subject and date of the inquiry as well as the action and date of the return. These registers do not provide an adequate finding aid for the files and can best be used to give an overall impression of the types of questions asked in Parliament and referred to the Secretary of State for action.
