The art records comprise work created by Jennifer Dickson over four decades of her career. Early works date from her teenage years and feature a self-portrait, figure studies and a selection of some of her first relief prints. Included are etchings produced in the early 1960s, during her studies with Stanley Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris. Dickson generally retained an artist proof set of each series of works which she produced. The art material in this donation includes the following key print or artist proof sets: Genesis (1965); Alchemic Images (1966); Aids to Meditation (1967); Song of Songs (1969); Out of Time (1970); Sweet Death and Other Pleasures (1972); Homage to Don Juan (1974); Body Perceptions (1974-75); The Secret Garden (1976-77); Three Mirrors to Narcissus (1979), both a photo etching set and a smaller set of sepia-toned silver gelatin prints; The Earthly Paradise (1980), in two size formats; The Venetian Prince (1980); Il Tiempo Classico (1981-82), in two size formats; L'Época Classica (1982); Grecian Odes (1983); Aphrodite Anadyomene (1984); The Gardens of Paradise (1984) in two size formats - mezzo-serigraphs and etchings; The Gilded Cage (1986); The Water Gardens (1987); and The Gardens of Desire (1988). Also included are cibrachromes for Reflected Palaces (1985), The Hospital for Wounded Angels (1987-88), and The Last Silence (1991). Six selected works were donated in memory of Jennifer Dickson's brother. A final work, an etching by Ghitta Caiserman-Roth, entitled The Inventors, was donated in memory of Max Roth.
The 2005 accrual added artist proof prints from the following series of works: Pavane for Spring (1989); Sonnet to Persephone (1990); Cadence and Echo (1991); Spirit of the Garden (1992); The Haunted Heart (1993); Sanctuaries and Paradeisos (1994); Old and New Worlds (1995); Water and Stone: A Prelude to Spring (1996); Quietude and Grace (1997); Water Song (1998); Sanctuary: A Landscape of the Mind (2000); and Nature and Artifice (2003). Additional records include the original etching plates for the series listed above; shadow boxes from the series Sweet Death and Other Pleasures (1972); Dickson's National Diploma in Design and her Art Teacher's Diploma theses from the University of London (1958-59); a self-portrait executed in 1951; and several posters for exhibition and book projects.
In addition to the finished works, the fonds includes many working documents relating to the production of her art series. These records include Kodaliths and random dot-screen tests with printing notes, other source material, and watercolour test samples which Dickson used as reference guides. Finding aids for these documents may be found on the shared drive.
Also included is one videocassette featuring the title JENNIFER DICKSON'S BIANCA (1987).
