MacDonald, Larry, 1921-1997 : Larry MacDonald was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on 22 August 1921. He joined the army at the outbreak of the Second World War and was injured at the Battle of Caen in 1944. Following the war MacDonald entered the field of broadcasting, working as a journalist in the CFRA (Ottawa) newsroom. Thereafter he began working as an on-air reporter and Senior News Editor for the CBC. MacDonald was the first CBC Television Newscaster in Ottawa. He was the winner of two North American broadcasting awards, and the 1969 Armstrong Memorial Research Foundation Award. MacDonald retired in 1982 after 28 years of service with the CBC. In 1988 he completed Good Evening, a book dealing with the early days of the CBC TV News. MacDonald was a Life Member of the Parliamentary Press Gallery and the National Press Club of Ottawa. He was married to CBC broadcaster Mildred MacDonald. Larry MacDonald died in 1997.
MacDonald, Mildred, 1927-2009 : Mildred MacDonald, CBC broadcaster, was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She began her journalism career with various Saskatchewan newspapers, moving on to broadcast journalism as a stringer for CHAB radio in Moose Jaw. After the Second World War MacDonald joined CFRA (Ottawa) where she hosted a daily magazine program called Meet Mildred Joyce. Thereafter, she moved to CBO to write and voice the daily Morning Commentary. In the mid 1950s MacDonald joined the CBC/CBO as a journalist, broadcaster, columnist and host. MacDonald contributed to network programs including Assignment, Trans Canada Matinee and the International Service, Metronome, Radio Noon and Les McLaughlin's Northern Service, as well as television programs such as Marketplace, Diplomatic Passport, and In Town and Out.
Over the course of her career MacDonald worked on thirty-four radio programs and five television shows. She retired from the CBC in 2001. MacDonald was married to CBC broadcaster Larry MacDonald (1921-1997). Together they had one child, Alexandra MacDonald. Mildred MacDonald died on June 4th 2009 at the age of 81 years.
