Sub-series consists of letter book copies of numbered and private or confidential despatches sent by the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Governor-in-Chief, the British Minister at Washington and other Governors and Lieutenant Governors in British North America. These despatches differ from those in the Despatches sent sub-series in that they include Private, Confidential or Secret despatches not meant for disclosure to the Legislature. An index to volumes 60 and 61 is found at the end of volume 61. A list of the contents of volume 62 is found at the beginning of the volume and provides despatch date, number, subject, number of enclosures and date sent. There is no index to volume 63 but the documents have been arranged in chronological order.

Custodial history:

The photostat copy of an entry book kept for Sir Howard Douglas for 1824-1826 was received in 1923. The original is now found in the Sir Howard Douglas and family collection (R2455, formerly MG24-A3), volume 3.

Availability of other formats note:

Microfilm copies of vols. 62 and 63 are available on reel C-15632. Volumes 60 and 61 have not been filmed. However, the original despatches as received in London (a copy version of which was retained in the colony and now appears as vols. 60-61) can be consulted on the National Archives microfilm of CO 188/31 (reel B-1186).

These volumes duplicate the contents of the "Despatches" portion of the series CO 188, New Brunswick, Original Correspondence (MG11-CO188) found within the Colonial Office fonds. The original entry book kept for Sir Howard Douglas for 1824-1826 (a photostat copy of which appears here in volumes 60-61) is found in the Sir Howard Douglas and family collection (R2455, formerly MG24-A3), volume 3. The content of vols. 60-61 duplicates that of vol. 48 in the Despatches sent sub-series of this series.
