Series consists of proclamations and registers of copies of proclamations from Quebec, Upper and Lower Canada, the Province of Canada and Canada. A proclamation is a document by which a state matter is given public notice or generally made known ("proclaimed"). Over time, various state matters have been the subject of proclamations: entry into force of acts, sections of acts, international conventions, agreements and accords, creation or termination of department, summoning and dissolving of Parliament, issuance of election writs, designation of commemorative days or weeks and national days of mourning, amendments to the Constitution, appointment of a new governor-general, death of the sovereign and accession to the throne of their successor, offering of rewards for the discovery of those guilty of serious crimes, establishment of townships, counties, and cities, etc. Since 1867, proclamations have appeared in condensed form in the Canada Gazette.
